Mayor Sam Sullivan and Councillor Suzanne Anton today confirmed that City Council will not interfere in the current collective bargaining process. Earlier today, Councillor Heather Deal said City Council should be reconvened to reassess the city’s bargaining position.
“What the current process needs now is more collective bargaining — not grandstanding,” said Mayor Sullivan. “Instead of interfering in the process, Councillor Deal should encourage her supporters to return to the bargaining table in the interest of all taxpayers and our employees. That is the responsible approach.”
“It is critical that all Councillors respect collective bargaining,” added Councillor Anton. “Involvement by Council at this stage would damage that process, do nothing to further negotiations and have a negative impact on neighbouring municipalities. We must be accountable to the citizens of Vancouver, taxpayers and our employees.”
