If you take a look at the latest crime stats for the city of Vancouver you’d think everything’s coming up roses.
When comparing year to date over the same time last year total violent crimes are down ever so slightly with fewer robberies and sexual assaults but there were three more murders.
As well property crimes are down including break and enters, theft of vehicle and theft from auto.
Mayor Sam Sullivan was asked if crime is down in general why do we need so many new officers….
“We need to get crime down even more I believe the crime rates and rates of public disorder are way too high in any case even though those are going down.”
When compared with 2006 violent crime is down 13-per cent and property crime is down 21-per cent.
The biggest drops are in theft of vehicle and theft from auto but the mayor says those numbers are still unacceptable.
Theft of vehicle and theft from auto are both down 19-per cent year to date when compared with the same time last year.
Mayor Sam Sullivan with nearly 600 cars stolen in the city and about 25-hundred thefts from auto so far this year, those numbers are still unacceptable…
“In my book those are very high I know they’re lower than many other jurisdictions and we have achieved a lot here but they need to go down every further.”
Theft of vehicle from 2008 compared with 2006 is down 40-per cent.
