Update on the CUPE labour strike

Further to previous notices, I am writing to update you on the CUPE labour strike. While Council was hoping for labour peace by Labour Day, I am disappointed to report that CUPE 15 rejected the two recent offers put forward by the City of Vancouver.
You will recall that these offers reflected the same terms and conditions that successfully brought down picket lines in North Vancouver.
As we enter the 7th week of this CUPE strike, I wanted to share with you some new information which has now been posted by the City’s negotiating team on our website (www.vancouver.ca).

Mayor and Councillor Welcome Launch of National Mental Health Commission

Mayor Sam Sullivan and Vancouver Councillor Kim Capri welcomed the launch of the Government of Canada’s new Mental Health Commission. Earlier today, Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced the final selection of the Commission’s Board of Directors at a gathering of international leaders in the mental health field.

“Delivering compassionate solutions to social challenges is one of the goals we have established for our government,” said Mayor Sullivan. “While we are making significant progress, municipal governments cannot tackle these issues alone. Renewed leadership, direct investment and innovation are required from all levels of government to battle mental illness across Canada.”

Your responses to the Mayor’s Communiqués

We have received an unprecedented amount of correspondence as a result of our Mayor’s Communiqués during the recent CUPE labour dispute. To send your own comments, email mayor@vancouver.ca.

Thank you for your words of support, and your thoughtful suggestions to date. Keep them coming.

The following is a sampling of your comments…

Dear Mayor,
In my view, it seems the city has made offers that are more than fair… We are getting along just fine, and can wait for the union to agree to settle on the terms that have been published.

We support you in this, and expect you to look out for our best interests.

Thank you.

Library Offers Five-Year Deal to CUPE Local 391

Further to my previous messages, please find below the latest on the current labour dispute from the City of Vancouver.

The Vancouver Public Library has formally tabled a five-year offer with a 17.5 percent wage increase to CUPE Local 391, which represents library employees.
The Vancouver Public Library offer includes the same term and pay increase accepted by the District of North Vancouver and their workers represented by CUPE Local 389.
“I believe this is a fair offer and hope that our CUPE local will feel the same way,” said Vancouver City Librarian Paul Whitney. “This offer matches the term and wage level of the District of North Vancouver settlement and we hope CUPE Local 391 will see this as forming the basis for reaching a settlement.”
