Mayor Invites Ideas From the Public on Olympic Celebrations

Consultation will support goals of inclusion & promoting Vancouver as premier destination for arts, culture and recreation: Sullivan

Mayor Sam Sullivan today invited local residents and businesses to participate in Vancouver’s public consultation process regarding Olympic and Paralympic celebrations leading up to the 2010 Winter Games. The City’s public involvement plan will facilitate an exchange of ideas, focus limited resources and foster civic pride.

“Being the world’s most inclusive city is one of the goals I have established for my government,” said Mayor Sullivan. “This consultation will provide an opportunity for residents to become more involved in local planning leading up to 2010.”

Mayor Sullivan to Mark July 12 as “Roy Mah Day” in Vancouver

Mayor Sam Sullivan today announced that he will mark next Thursday, July 12, 2007 as a special day of recognition in the City of Vancouver to honour Mr. Roy Mah. Mayor Sullivan and Councillor BC Lee will introduce a special proclamation at this Tuesday’s City Council meeting.

Roy Quock Quon Mah was born in Edmonton in 1918 and received the Order of British Columbia in 2003. Among other things, he urged fellow Chinese Canadians to volunteer for service in World War II with the hopes of eventually winning the right to vote. Mr. Mah passed away on June 22, 2007.

Russian city wins 2014 Winter Olympic & Paralympic Games

Mayor Sam Sullivan today congratulated Sochi, Russia on their successful bid to host the 2014 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games. The official announcement was made today at the 119th session of the International Olympic Committee in Guatemala City.

“On behalf of the City of Vancouver, I want to congratulate the Russian bid organizers on this significant accomplishment,” said Mayor Sullivan. “As host city for the 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games, Vancouver will be ready to work closely with the Sochi organizing committee to share best practices and offer them the benefits of our experience.”

The city is expected to add more kilometres of official bike routes this year than it has over the past eight years combined.
A city report shows the number of routes designated for bicycle traffic are expected to jump by 62.7 kilometres during 2007, bringing the city total to 240.5 kilometres from the 177.8 that existed at the end of 2006.

The Beijing Organizing Committee of Olympic Games (BOCOG) is planning to hold an unprecedented 2008 Paralympic Games Torch Relay which will be carried out both in China and select international locations next summer.

Mayor Sam Sullivan today welcomed incoming Vancouver Police Department (VPD) Chief Constable Jim Chu to City Council chambers. As Chair of the Police Board, Mayor Sullivan announced Deputy Chief Chu’s appointment at VPD headquarters last week.

“On behalf of all Councillors, I want to congratulate Deputy Chief Chu on his new appointment,” said Mayor Sullivan. “The next five years will be the most important in our city’s history. With the appointment of a new Chief, we are marking a new era in policing for Vancouver.”

Mayor Sam Sullivan today announced he will support a proposed motion to establish greenhouse gas (GHG) emission targets for the City of Vancouver. Councillor Peter Ladner is expected to introduce the motion at today’s City Council meeting.

“Enhancing Vancouver’s reputation for environmental leadership is one of the goals I have established for my government,” said Mayor Sullivan. “By fighting urban sprawl, Vancouver’s EcoDensity plan will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve our quality of life. I want to congratulate Councillor Ladner for his work on this file.”

Local & Regional Elected Officials Invited to Participate in 2007 Vancouver Pride Parade

Mayor Sam Sullivan and City Councillors Tim Stevenson and Elizabeth Ball today invited local and regional elected officials to participate in the 2007 Vancouver Pride Parade. This year’s event takes place Sunday, August 5 – proceeding from Denman Street to Pacific and Beach Avenues to Sunset Beach.

“The Pride Parade demonstrates our community’s commitment to inclusiveness and human rights,” said Mayor Sullivan. “I want to encourage all of our municipal colleagues to celebrate these values and join us for this year’s event.”
