Mayor & Councillors Support Brian Foley Recommendations

Mayor Sam Sullivan and Councillor Elizabeth Ball today confirmed their support for the recommendations made by Brian Foley to end Vancouver’s CUPE strike. The following is a statement from Mayor Sullivan:

First I want to recognize the work of Brian Foley and the extensive report he completed. He is a man of great integrity with a proven track record of results in various labour disputes.

I would also like to thank the citizens of Vancouver for their ongoing civility and patience during this strike. The fact the City has looked as good as it has over the last three months is a credit to our citizens and small business owners who have demonstrated real pride in their City.

Federal Government can support Vancouver priorities with anti-drug strategy: Sullivan

Mayor Sam Sullivan and Councillor Kim Capri today welcomed a 34-page City of Vancouver report on innovative treatment for people with drug addiction. Mayor Sullivan also confirmed his intention to invite the federal government to provide funding from its pending anti-drug strategy to support Vancouver priorities.

“Delivering compassionate solutions to our social challenges is one of the five goals we have established for our government and is the key reason we introduced Project Civil City,” said Mayor Sullivan. “I support substitution treatment for those suffering from addiction because it rejects the use of needles and illegal drugs and offers real hope of reducing homelessness, crime and public disorder. It can be the pathway to long term abstinence.”

Mayor’s Film Task Force Report Released

“Greener” productions and improved communication with residents & industry recommended

Mayor Sam Sullivan today released a special Task Force Report on ways the City of Vancouver can improve management of the city’s film industry. The task force was Chaired by Shawn Williamson, CEO of Brightlight Pictures and supported by Councillor Elizabeth Ball.

“Ensuring Vancouver’s economic success is one of the five goals we have established for our government,” said Mayor Sullivan. “The film industry contributes significantly to our economic well-being. I want to thank Shawn, Councillor Ball, our Filming and Special Events Office and the Task Force members for their important contribution.”

Mayor Welcomes Delegates to Vancouver for Union of BC Municipalities Convention

Local government part of the climate change solution: Sullivan

Mayor Sam Sullivan today welcomed delegates from across the province to Vancouver for the annual Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM) convention. The theme of this year’s convention is climate change.
“Through zoning and building regulations, municipal governments possess two of the most powerful tools in the battle to combat climate change,” said Mayor Sullivan. “I look forward to spending time with other BC Mayors and Councillors to share ideas and compare best practices.”

Mayor and Councillors to Support Olympic Live Site Plan

Mayor will invite Federal Government to secure commitment of $10 million for 2010 community celebration

Mayor Sam Sullivan and Councillor Suzanne Anton today confirmed their intention to support the proposed Olympic Live Site Plan at this week’s City Council meeting. If the plan is adopted by Council, Mayor Sullivan said he will immediately contact the federal government to secure their $10 million contribution for the community celebration.

“In addition to using the Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games to leverage significant social investments, we want to celebrate this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our city,” said Mayor Sullivan. “If Council approves the plan, I will work with our federal partners to secure their contribution as quickly as possible. The letter is on my desk and ready to be signed.”

Mayor Sam Sullivan and Councillor Suzanne Anton today announced plans to initiate a series of roundtable meetings starting next month regarding completion of the Millennium Line from Commercial Drive to Central Broadway – and ultimately UBC. This announcement is further to the Mayor’s ongoing commitment to community consultation.

Vancouver Welcomes Invitation to Host Beijing 2008 Paralympic Summer Games Torch Relay

The City of Vancouver today welcomed an invitation from the Beijing Organizing Committee for the 2008 Olympic and Paralympic Summer Games (BOCOG) to co-host the 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games Torch Relay together with the Canadian Paralympic Committee (CPC). The invitation was announced by BOCOG, marking the one-year countdown to the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Summer Games which are scheduled for September 6-17, 2008.
The Beijing 2008 Paralympic Summer Games Torch Relay is the first of its kind and will take place in China and select international locations. The Relay will start August 28, following the closing of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Summer Games, and finish on September 6, the opening of the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Summer Games.
