Ambassador Program could be expanded by end of year

Mayor Sam Sullivan and Councillor Kim Capri today welcomed the first report of Project Civil City Commissioner Geoff Plant and an historic Vancouver/BC partnership to construct approximately 1200 units of social and supportive housing on 12 city-owned sites.

In addition to supporting the Civil City Report and social housing partnership, City Council approved a plan that could significantly expand the Downtown Ambassador Program by the end of the year.

City Proposes Next Step to Millennium Line Completion

Mayor and Councillors will support establishment of Broadway West planning & engineering team

Mayor Sam Sullivan, Councillor Suzanne Anton and Councillor Peter Ladner today confirmed their plans to support a proposal from city staff to create an engineering and planning team to support Translink’s Broadway West Rapid Transit study. The plan will come to Vancouver City Council for review today.

“Completing the Millennium Line is Vancouver’s top transit infrastructure priority,” said Mayor Sullivan. “This plan will ensure the City is very involved in the development of this large transit initiative – in partnership with Translink. In addition to supporting engineering and planning, it will help facilitate public involvement in project design.”

Tourism Partnership Will “Invite the World” to Vancouver in Lead Up to 2010

Invite the WorldThe City of Vancouver and Tourism Vancouver today announced their plans to initiate an “Invite the World” multilingual campaign in the lead up to 2010. Mayor Sam Sullivan and Tourism Vancouver President & CEO Rick Antonson introduced the new initiative today at City Hall.

Mayor Releases Immigration Task Force Report

Recommendations will promote inclusion: Sullivan

Mayor Sam Sullivan today released the results of a special Task Force report that recommends initiatives the City of Vancouver can undertake to assist immigrants. The Task Force was chaired by Mr. Zool Suleman.

“I would like to thank Mr. Suleman and the members of the Task Force for their important work and contribution to our city,” said Mayor Sullivan. “Their recommendations will help achieve our goal to be the most inclusive city in the world and establish the strongest economy in Canada.”

Public Invited to Provide Views on Millennium Line Completion

Mayor Sam Sullivan and Vancouver Councillors Peter Ladner and Suzanne Anton today invited residents, businesses and community organizations to provide their views about plans to complete the Millennium Rapid Transit Line to Central Broadway – and ultimately UBC.
An on-line survey at www.samsullivan.ca is part of a three phase public involvement process for the Millennium Line completion announced in July.
“In addition to promoting sustainable development, completion of the Millennium Line will create economic opportunities, support EcoDensity and increase access to the Broadway corridor, health services and the University of British Columbia,” said Mayor Sullivan. “Making Vancouver one of the world’s most sustainable communities is one of the five goals we have established for our government. Completing the Millennium Line is Vancouver’s top transit infrastructure priority.”

City marks Diwali through celebration at Roundhouse

The City of Vancouver, as a partner in the Vancouver Celebrates Diwali Steering Committee, will help mark the annual South Asian festival of lights with a free public celebration on:

Mayor Sam Sullivan and Councillor Elizabeth Ball today confirmed their support for the next phase of redevelopment of Vancouver’s Queen Elizabeth Theatre. The $26 million investment was recommended in a report to City Council and accepted unanimously.

“Making Vancouver a premiere destination for arts and culture is one of the five goals we have established for our government,” said Mayor Sullivan. “The investment we have approved today will help us achieve that goal and ensure the Queen Elizabeth Theatre remains as a critical part of our cultural infrastructure for generations to come.”

Mayor welcomes choice by province of 10 non-profits to operate supportive housing

Mayor Sam Sullivan welcomed news that the provincial government has selected 10 non-profit organizations to operate the single room occupancy (SRO) hotels purchased this year by the Province, and two city-owned sites.

Ten non-profit groups were selected through an Expressions of Interest proposal call issued in August. In addition to the 10 hotels purchased by the Province this year, the proposal call also included the Drake Hotel purchased by the City of Vancouver, and a new, supportive housing development for the city-owned site at 337 West Pender St. The organizations selected for these two Vancouver-owned sites will need to receive city council approval.

“The provision of supportive housing for low-income singles is one of the ways that we’re going to reach our Project Civil City goal of reducing homelessness by at least 50 per cent by 2010,” said Vancouver Mayor Sam Sullivan. “These respected community service providers will address a diverse range of housing needs. I’d like to thank Minister Rich Coleman for his leadership on this initiative.”

New units will help achieve Project Civil City objectives

Mayor Sam Sullivan and Councillor Kim Capri today welcomed a significant social housing announcement by Premier Gordon Campbell and Housing Minister Rich Coleman. Vancouver’s Civil City Commissioner Geoff Plant also attended the announcement at Vancouver’s Lookout Emergency Aid Shelter.

“On behalf of the City of Vancouver, I want to thank Premier Campbell, Minister Coleman and the entire provincial government for their commitment to social and supportive housing,” said Mayor Sullivan. “This announcement will help us achieve the Project Civil City objectives we have identified. Working with all levels of government, we can deliver compassionate solutions to our social challenges.”

Today, the provincial government announced new and expanded measures to help break the cycle of homelessness with an added $41 million.
